Residents of Little Rock formed Unity Martial Arts in 2009. Their goal was to become a school for people interested in lifelong learning of martial arts more than black belts and trophies.
Unity has become that. And much more.
While providing high-caliber martial arts training,
Unity also fulfills social and intellectual needs for many students.
Children exercise their brains, bodies, and creativity in ways almost never available in schools. Adults make new social connections, develop leadership skills, and receive parenting support.
The School of Extraordinary Animal Mastery
Our week long camps combine physicality and creativity as the kids are admitted to a fantastical school where animal martial arts instructors teach and challenge them, and forces outside the school create moral challenges and exciting stories (think Kung Fu Panda meets Harry Potter). As they pass tests over the years they progress through the ranks of the school, eventually becoming instructors themselves!
During each camp week, the kids choose one of the animal martial art styles to practice. When they have taken different combinations of animals, new options are unlocked (i.e. when they have passed the test for Tiger and Monkey, they unlock Panther). Based on their choice of the week, they earn points for their group with affirmative behaviors (hard work, responsibility, compassion, leadership) and the group that is in the lead had special benefits.
If kids wear the shirt that goes with their group, they get an extra point each day! The shirts also help us know at a glance what each child is working on. They're also beautiful!
