Sometimes it can be hard to find a workout that is both challenging and fun. You may find going to the gym too boring, or get lonely trying to work out on your own. You want something where you’re learning all the time, building community, and getting a great workout at the same time.
Introducing Unity Martial Arts’ Brazilian Jiujitsu – the perfect way to learn, grow, and sweat. Our experienced instructors will welcome you into a challenging but safe practice, teaching you how each movement works and when it’s used. Our friendly community of grapplers will patiently let you grow into your game at your pace, and give you all the challenges you want as you grow ready for it.
Daily stress can overwhelm and lead to mental health problems and lower quality of life.
Without appropriate coping mechanisms, this stress can escalate, affecting personal relationships and overall well-being.
Practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can help manage and alleviate stress. The workouts, learning to remain calm while grappling, and necessity to act from a state of calm work to rewire your brain a little each class. Over time, this can lead to better stress management and improved mental health.
Mental health issues can be debilitating, leading to decreased productivity and quality of life if left unaddressed. These issues can worsen over time, potentially leading to more serious complications.
Brazilian Jiujitsu has been shown to have positive effects on mental health. Its focus on relaxation through exertion and a trusting relationship with partner and coach can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, promoting a sense of peace and well-being. Unity Martial Arts is an affiliate gym of the We Defy Foundation (https://wedefyfoundation.org) which provides services to combat veterans.
Poor physical health can lead to a host of other problems, including chronic diseases and reduced quality of life. Without proper care and attention, physical health can decline, leading to long-term health issues. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an amazing workout, promoting strength, coordination, and endurance. Unlike most workouts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu combines strength and cardiovascular exercise, making it an excellent tool for overall physical wellness.
Martial arts training goes beyond learning self-defense moves; it’s a journey of empowerment, discipline, and confidence. Here’s how BJJ lessons can bring about true transformation:
We’re not just a fitness class; we’re a supportive community. Our program is designed to be easy to follow. All ages, shapes, and fitness levels are welcome. We believe in trying new things without fear or pressure. and our passionate instructors are here to guide you every step of the way.
Simultaneously, you’ll learn to control your stress. Learning to relax and breathe while facing an opponent on the mats will help you react calmly to stressful situations and prevent future pain caused by tension and tight muscles.
Classes start with easy motions meant to relax your body and mind, prepare you for the main exercises and increase balance. These exercises are sport specific and designed to train movements used throughout the class.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is characterized by sequences of movements and techniques. You can expect to learn and practice these techniques which involve a combination of martial movements, which will improve strength, flexibility, and endurance.
The classes generally end with partner application. These fun and social drills help to put the day’s techniques into action. This usually starts with working from specific positions or scenarios and ends with free sparring. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu sparring allows the student to acknowledge they are caught, tap out, and start again.
The four head instructors at Unity combine more than 130 years of experience.
Our head instructor, Matt Smith, is a third degree black belt with over twenty years of grappling experience. Matt started his martial arts journey by attending the Marine Corps’ Martial Arts Instructor Course. Following completion of the course, Matt continued his martial arts journey by training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and kickboxing. Later Matt added Judo to his training. Matt earned his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt in 2014 and his Judo black belt in 2023. He has competed in both martial arts at the local, regional, and national levels.
Camps last a week from 8 am to 3 pm. Participants must be at least 8 years old (or have passed 2 tests at Unity for younger children). Kids must bring lunch and a snack, and shoes for running outside.
